As part of NABET 700-M UNIFOR’s ongoing commitment to equity and diversity on our sets, we are pleased to announce a new series of textured hair seminars/workshops led by Andrea Sampson, President and CEO of Efe Magazine, a trailblazing publication that stands as Canada's premier diverse magazine within the professional beauty industry.
We begin with the foundational course Why Representation Matters – The Importance of Diversity which is ideal for beauty industry professionals, including hairstylists, makeup artists, and salon owners, as well as students aspiring to enter the beauty field. It is designed for those who are committed to fostering a more inclusive and diverse industry. By the end of this course, students will have a profound understanding of the importance of diversity and representation in the beauty industry, equipped with the skills to address and embrace the needs of a diverse clientele.
Important Note: The Efe training curriculum was developed in conjunction with hands-on sessions that will be offered at a later date. This first module must be completed in its entirety as it is a pre-requisite for participation in future trainings – no exceptions. All future sessions focus on practical skills instruction with mannequins and/or models on topics such as identifying and cutting different textures, barbering, chemical services and finishing. Combining theoretical learning with practical application ensures students are well-prepared to implement diversity in their professional practice. Interactive lectures, group discussions, and hands-on activities will be utilized to create a dynamic and engaging learning experience.

This class emphasizes the critical importance of representation and inclusivity, preparing students to meet the needs of a diverse clientele with confidence and cultural competence.
Learning Objectives
Understand Diversity Concepts and Statistics: Students will explore key diversity concepts and examine relevant statistics to understand the current landscape of the beauty industry. This foundational knowledge will highlight the importance of inclusivity and representation in professional practices.
Recognize the Importance of Representation: Through engaging discussions and case studies, students will gain insight into why representation matters in the beauty industry. They will learn about the positive impact of diverse representation on both professionals and clients.
Hands-On Hair Techniques: Before diving into practical skills, students will reflect on the importance of diversity in their work. This will ensure they approach hair styling with an inclusive mindset, ready to cater to all hair types and textures.
Removing the Fear – Understanding Stigma
Identifying Biases and Prejudices: This module addresses the biases, prejudices, and stigmas that exist in society and within individuals. By recognizing these elements, students will learn to challenge and overcome them.
Addressing Stigma in the Beauty Industry: Students will engage in activities and discussions aimed at dismantling stigmas related to hair types, skin tones, and cultural beauty standards. This will foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for all clients.
Practical Application: Through guided exercises, students will practice techniques that prioritize empathy and understanding, ensuring they can meet the diverse needs of their clients with respect and professionalism.
