Thanksgiving - October 14, 2024

October 11, 2024

The first national Thanksgiving in Canada was celebrated in 1859, organized by Protestant clergy inspired by the American Thanksgiving. This holiday aimed to publicly acknowledge God’s mercies, although some Canadians criticized it for blurring the line between church and state. After Confederation, Thanksgiving was first observed on April 5, 1872, to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales. It became an annual event on November 6, 1879, with Parliament setting the date and theme each year, often related to the harvest or royal anniversaries. Dates varied, sometimes as late as December 6, but the third Monday in October eventually became the most popular observation date, fitting with the favourable fall weather for outdoor activities.

This is a friendly reminder that our office, including the Crewing department, will be closed this Monday, October 14th, in observance of this Holiday and will resume operations on the next business day.
