This 5-day intensive Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) training is provided by the Workers Health & Safety Centre and approved by the Ministry of Labour.

Pursuant to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) employers are required to have a JHSC consisting of at least one certified management rep and one certified worker rep when there are more than 20 employees in the workplace.

A JHSC assists in providing greater protection against workplace injury, illness, and deaths. The cooperative involvement of workers and employers on a JHSC ensures that everything possible is done to identify and eliminate or mitigate workplace health and safety hazards. (For more information, see the JHSC Guide).

Members must commit to attending all 5 days + pass various tests to receive their certification. Successful participants will receive a refund of their deposit.

Part 1, Basic Certification provides a complete understanding of occupational health and safety legislation, including the rights and responsibilities of workplace parties and certified responsibilities on joint health and safety committees in particular. This will include a full discussion about the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and the purpose and requirements of workplace health and safety policies and programs. Equally important, participants learn how to identify, assess, and control, or better yet eliminate workplace hazards.

Part 2, Workplace-Specific Hazard Training focuses on significant hazards in the workplace. It covers RACE methodology (recognize, assess, control, and evaluate) on how to assess those hazards and ways to control and/or eliminate them. Each module is designed to build on the knowledge gained in the Basic Certification training and apply it to specific workplace hazards with emphasis on measures to eliminate or control exposes. Our selected six hazards are:

  • Electrical Hazards

  • Physical Hazards

  • Safety Hazards

  • PPE

  • Indoor Air Quality

  • Workplace Violence and Harassment

Refresher training is required every three (3) years to maintain certification.
